Stepladder & Ladder Inspections – Fully Compliant, Professionally Delivered

Did you know?

For many businesses, work at height equipment such as stepladders and leaning ladders are critical to daily operations. However, they also represent significant risks if not properly inspected and maintained.

When Was the Last Time Your Ladders Were Inspected?

If you’re unsure, you’re not alone — but it could be a costly oversight. Falls from height remain the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK. To help prevent accidents, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and PUWER 1998 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) require that all work at height equipment is regularly inspected by a competent person.

Ladder Inspection Requirements

  • Ladders used daily: Formal inspection every 3 months

  • Ladders used weekly or occasionally: Formal inspection every 6 months

  • Inspection frequency should be defined through a thorough risk assessment

  • Undertaking these inspections in-house can be time-consuming and complex. That’s where we come in.

What the Regulations Say

Work at Height Regulations 2005

  • Equipment used for working at height must be inspected at suitable intervals

  • Inspections must be carried out by a competent person

  • Records must be kept until the next inspection and be made available to enforcement authorities

PUWER Regulation 6 – Inspection Requirements

  • After installation or relocation

  • At regular intervals where deterioration may pose a risk

  • After exceptional events (e.g. damage, modification, or change in use)

Who Can Inspect Ladders?
Ladders must be inspected by someone who:

  • Understands the equipment

  • Knows what faults to look for

  • Can decide what action to take if a problem is found

This could be an in-house trained person or an external expert. At SM Safety Training & Consultancy Ltd, our team are ladder inspection specialists with industry-recognised qualifications and practical experience.
